In 1841, the Pasir Panjang Road was laid down by Mr. John Turnbull Thomson, the Government Surveyor of Singapore. The road is situated along the south-western coast of Singapore. In the past, Pasir Panjang Road was a long sandy beach hugging the coastal line, the name, Pasir Panjang literally means “long sand” in Malay. By 1950, the Pasir Panjang road was extended and stretched all the way to the Jurong River.
As early as the 1920s, several bungalows were built and owned by the rich along the coast in the Pasir Panjang area. Up till today, some of them can still be found in the estate. In the 1930s, the Kallang Airport was constructed and due to this reason, some Malay families were relocated and settled in the Pasir Panjang area. By the early 60s, a number of Malay fishing villages were formed around there as well. In the late 60s, the coastal area at Pasir Panjang was reclaimed for wharves and used for containerisation.
The Pasir Panjang Terminal of the Port of Singapore (PSA) is also located here. To date, the Pasir Panjang Terminal is Singapore’s largest and most advanced container terminal. It is well equipped with berths that can easily accommodate the world’s largest container ships.
Being close to the coast, the Pasir Panjang area is well covered with lush greenery. There are three prominent parks along the Pasir Panjang coast, they are the West Coast Park, Kent Ridge Park and Labrador Park. These areas are popular recreational spot among the natural lovers across Singapore.
One of our well-known Heritage roads of Singapore, The South Buona Vista Road can still be found within this district. The South Buona Vista Road links the Pasir Panjang Road and Dover, it is best known as the “99 turns” due to its notorious curves and was once used as a racing circuits for motorists and cyclists between the 50s and 80s. The road is now lined with an evergreen forest, providing drivers or passengers a leisurely journey while they are on their way home.
Other than being known for its port-related facilities, the Pasir Panjang area is a highly sought after residential area as well. The Pasir Panjang district comprises of mainly low-rise low density residential development. Over the years, this area has been very popular among local homebuyers or even foreign expats probably due to its calm and tranquil setting in a quietly exclusive enclave.
Today, when you drive past the Pasir Panjang district, it is not hard to notice that there are quite a number of new, sophisticated low-rise condominiums along Pasir Panjang Road. The housing demands for this area have been on the rise especially after the government mentioned about the development of the Greater Southern Waterfront in the 2030s after the Pasir Panjang terminals are shifted to Tuas. Responses of the new launches along Pasir Panjang Road have always been overwhelming as Pasir Panjang Road is only a short distance away from the future waterfront city.
