Singapore’s Most Stylish Neighbourhood

When it comes to Singapore’s coolest, hippest neighbourhood, there are always the same usual suspects that trip of the nation’s collective tongue: Tiong Bahru, Keong Saik, Everton Park, Jalan Basar and Kampong Glam’s Haji Lane. There is another one however, one that has kept itself to itself, and has been more than happy to fly under the radar. That place is Siglap, and despite its lack of appearances and mentions in “Singapore’s top 5…” lists it has more than enough style, hip and downright cool to give those that do feature, a run for their money.

There are three consequences to this lack of recognition, all of them positives. First of all, there aren’t the crowds that frequent similar areas. Instead, there is always a chilled out vibe to the neighbourhood, with visitors and locals alike simply relaxing and enjoying life at one of the many cafes and eateries.

Secondly, there is a complete lack of pretentiousness that far too often comes hand in hand with gentrification and the pressure of being suddenly fashionable. Thirdly, the property prices in the neighbourhood – one made up entirely of private housing by the way – have stayed roughly at the same level for the last few years, something that certainly cannot be said for those areas listed above.

Sandwiched between Marine Parade, Bedok and the East Coast Park and Sea, its close proximity to the wealth of malls and amenities those two districts provide means that residents don’t have far to go to find all the shopping and entertainment they could need, leaving Siglap itself to revel in its own, more laid back atmosphere. Not that it hasn’t got treats of its own to offer. There have always been many places to eat and drink along the area’s main roads, but a recent massive upsurge in openings along Upper East Coast Road, and on the ground floor of Siglap V means both residents and day visitors are spoiled for choice.

For those thinking of going to Siglap for more than just a day, and are considering moving in permanently, the neighbourhood also has a lot to offer. As well as some of the best schools on the island, it is only a 20 minute drive to the central business district, and can genuinely boast full sea views to certain lucky residents, something that is a lot rarer than you would think for an island nation.

The area has tended to have been ignored by the developers in recent years, but that is no longer the case. Traditionally one of the sticking points for people deciding against calling Siglap home is the lack of MRT. With the opening of its own station (scheduled for 2023), that barrier will be removed, and there are plans afoot to develop the few vacant plots of land still available.

With those developments, more and more people are starting to sit up and take notice, so for better or worse, Siglap may not be able to fly under the radar for too much longer.
