Local Firm Trusted to Build $325 Million Tanah Merah Station Platform
A well-established, local firm has been awarded the important contract to build a new platform at the increasingly busy, Tanah Merah Station in Singapore. This contract is valued to be worth $325 million and includes building a modern platform at this busy station and constructing viaducts.
The Land Transport Authority have continued their aims to improve the rail network and have given this contract to the trusted, Lum Chang Building Contractors (LCBC), who have extensive infrastructure knowledge and experience with other building projects locally across Singapore, as well as internationally. Their previously successful constructions include Bukit Panjang MRT and stations based on the Circle Line.
The Tanah Merah Station project will take just under 10 years to complete and focuses on providing quicker and greater access to Expo and Changi Airport for local residents and commuters. At the moment, Tanah Merah Station has three lines that go to and from Pasir Ris, Simei, Changi Airport, Expo, Joo Koon and Bedok. With only three lines, this has meant travellers have to wait longer as trains travelling backwards and forwards from Changi Airport have to wait for other trains to move out before they can come in. The brand new construction will bring two additional, center tracks to the Tanah Merah Station, which will allow for more efficient travel in the area. The two outlying tracks will be utilized for travel going to Joo Koon and from Pasir Ris, while the new center tracks will be solely used for trains travelling the East-West MRT, as well as towards and back from Changi Airport. The new project follows the lead of Jurong East Interchange Station and its additional platform constructed in 2011.
This contemporary platform and additional two tracks are promised to shorten waiting times for commuters, making travel more convenient, comfortable and quicker for residents, especially to the Singapore Expo Convention & Exhibition Centre and the world’s best airport as chosen by Skytrax.
In addition to the new platform, Lum Chang Building Contractors will also extend the current East-West Line MRT tracks so that it will connect to the new four-in-one East Coast Integrated Depot in Changi. When it is completed in 2024, this multi-level depot will be the first in the world to house different train depots and buses together. This will include three lines; East-West, Downtown and Thomson-East Coast.
Moreover, The Land Transport Authority has announced that they will work together with Lum Chang Building Contractors during the project to minimize any convenience caused by construction. They will ensure strict measures to reduce dust and control noise are implemented on the Tanah Merah Station construction site, as well as installing privacy screens for the benefit of residents living near to the building work. This will make sure both residents and builders are happy during the long-term project.
After construction began in late 2016, the station project and extension of the East-West Line is aiming to be fully completed by 2024.
