Toa Payoh is the first satellite HDB town of Singapore that was built in 1964. It is one of the oldest towns which is to be transformed. After transformation, there will be plenty of flats. The town will contain 2 housing areas that will be public. The first site will be 10ha that is near the Caldecott MRT Station. The second will be 4ha in the Toa Payoh East near the Lian Shan Shuang Lin Monastery.
Moreover, the total number of flats is not decided yet. According to the analysts, the number of units that can fit in both the sites is 5,000. But this depends on the sizes of the flats. In present times, in Toa Payoh, there are almost 37,000 flats.
It is expected that the flats will be completed in the coming 5 to 10 years. The construction of the flats is handled by the Housing Boards. This is under the initiative Remaking Our Heartland (ROH). The total estates and towns that are selected for remaking are 9. They include:
- Toa Payoh
- Woodlands
- Jurong Lake
- Dawson
- Hougang
- East Coast
- Punggol
- Yishun
- Pasir Ris
The Defense Minister Ng Eng Hen held an exhibition related to the renewal plans for the area. This exhibition was held at the HDB Hub Atrium.
Many have held strong belief that the housing sites in Singapore will be in demand. The reason is the central location of the sites. As far as location is concerned, being located closely to the city, Toa Payoh has leverage over others. The building of the flats will help in reviving the whole estate.
In the next few years, many proposed ideas and planning will be unwind and carried out to revamp Toa Payoh into a vibrant pioneer estate with nostalgic charm. There will be a storyboard on how Toa Payoh was changed from swampland into a town. This will be displayed in the Arts and Heritage corner in the town center.
One of the most iconic features in the Toa Payoh heartland definitely goes to the old Dragon Playground in Toa Payoh Lorong 6. Another one will be the HDB Block 53 along Lorong 5 that formed a Y-shaped. The design is outstanding and different from the typical HDB flats we had in the 70s. These 2 new heritage icons will be marked on the storyboard as well.
More activity spots and street furniture like benches will also be added in The Central area nearer to the HDB and park to increase more resting, activity and interaction spaces for residents. More greenery will be added to the neighborhood and town center. More parks with outdoor fitness gym will also be added to the estate
As Toa Payoh has many senior citizens it will be a town that is elder-friendly. Handrails and ramps will be installed and paving will be leveled. This all will be done to make it a great place for elders. Along with this, the roads will be made safer for the elders as well.
