In our previous entry, we posted a video on Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong on the Development of Greater Southern Waterfront. Now, let us share with you some of the planning that URA has for our future waterfront city.
Developments of the Greater Southern Waterfront
By 2027, the City Terminals (at Tanjang Pagar, Keppel and Pulau Brani) and Pasir Panjang terminal will all be relocated and consolidated at Tuas, leaving behind a thousand hectares of land. This humongous piece of land which is about 3 times the size of Marina Bay will be used for development of the future Greater Southern Waterfront.
Presently, the Bayfront and Marina Central area are still under development. But as we can already see, for the past few years, with new attractions such as the Flyer, The Helix pedestrian bridge and not to forget the iconic Marina Bay Sands coming up, the entire area has evolved to a waterfront promenade bustling with activities. Likewise, the Greater Southern Waterfront which will be built after the relocation of all the terminals will be the next waterfront city in Singapore.
If you have never heard of the development of Greater Southern Waterfront and the relocation of the terminals along Tanjong Pagar , Pasir Panjang and etc, you might want to spend 2 minutes on this video. Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong mentioned about the government’s plan on the development of the Greater Southern Waterfront in his National Day Rally 2013 Speech.
In 1841, the Pasir Panjang Road was laid down by Mr. John Turnbull Thomson, the Government Surveyor of Singapore. The road is situated along the south-western coast of Singapore. In the past, Pasir Panjang Road was a long sandy beach hugging the coastal line, the name, Pasir Panjang literally means “long sand” in Malay. By 1950, the Pasir Panjang road was extended and stretched all the way to the Jurong River.

Today, as we walk past the Mount Sophia area, we can easily find hundreds of luxury and semi-luxury apartments, as well as all necessary amenities for a comfortable and luxury living. All the condominiums in Mount Sophia are built according to modern stylish architecture, making them compatible with fashionable life style, in an international level.
Over the years, several leading developers have undertaken massive development projects in Mount Sophia. Due to the high demand for the residential properties in Mount Sophia, the bids for undertaking new developments have been highly competitive as well.
In the 3rd Quarter of 2013, the land parcel at Mount Sophia which measured up to the size of 255,866 sq ft was released for sale by the URA (Urban Redevelopment Authority). Due to its strategic location of being in Prime district 9 and close to Dhoby Ghaut MRT Interchange, this land parcel drew strong interest from 9 potential bidders. The land parcel consisted of 3 heritage buildings and one of the conditions of sale was that these historical buildings must be conserved and restored. Read more
